Avalanche Safety and the Dynamic Science of Snow

Learn how to become avalanche savvy and delve deeper into the science of snow and avalanches in this special event at the Big Sky Resort. Learn about current snowpack conditions, brush up on general avalanche safety tips, dig a snow pit, practice with your beacons, and ask questions of leading snow science experts from MSU and Big Sky.
Brought to you by the Big Sky Resort, Big Sky Institute, Blue Water Task Force, Friends of the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center, and Gallatin Alpine Sports.

9-10am: 1 hour basic avalanche awareness talk by the Friends of the GNFAC
10-10:15am: Current snowpack conditions report and information about backcountry skiing in the Big Sky Area by Big Sky Ski Patrol
10:30 am–2pm: On-snow stability evaluation and beacon clinic (groups of 10, pre-registration required) by Friends of the GNFAC and Big Sky Ski Patrol
2:30-4pm: Snow science seminar and panel discussion by MSU snow scientists, BSI, and BWTF

Glide & Gorge

Time: 12-4pm
Location: Lone Mountain Ranch

Ski along the trails, stopping along the way for gourmet appetizers, soups, entrees and desserts. Local breweries and wine distributors will be on hand to provide the perfect accompaniment to each dish. Contact 995-4644 for information and registration. The event will run from 12pm - 4pm and the cost is $40 (that includes a ski pass for the day).

Yellowstone Science and Creatures of the Lake Depths

Yellowstone Lake, the jewel of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, supports a truly unique ecosystem that forms the underlying resource for an enormous food web – from microscopic organisms to trout and grizzly bears.

Stop by the warming hut for refreshments and to learn about Yellowstone Science during the Big Sky Nordic Center Family Sprint Races (4 – 6 p.m.), and stay for a special presentation at 6 p.m. by BSI researchers John Varley (former Director of Yellowstone Center for Resources), and Steph McGinnis, M.S., who have been busy discovering an oasis of life at the bottom of Yellowstone Lake.

Gallatin Glissade

The 5th annual Gallatin Glissade is an 18km skate ski race with a net elevation loss of over 800 feet! It connects the lifts at the Big Sky Ski Resort to the Meadow Village at the bottom of the valley in Big Sky.

Family Night with Moonlight

Moonlight Basin is a place where families come together. Moonlight Basin is hosting a Kickoff Party to get the Headwaters Spring Runoff started right! During the day on Friday competitors are invited to check out their line, then that evening they and their supporters are invited to join us for a ski movies and a pasta feed. Headwaters Spring Runoff

Moonlight Basin is hosting its 6th Headwaters Spring Runoff. This big mountain event draws an amazing caliber of skiers, riders and telemarkers from all across the region. Moonlight Basin’s Headwaters, known as the steepest in-bound terrain, becomes the focal point for this exciting competition. Its high visibility and energy level makes it a great spectator event! Pond Skim

Prepare to get wet and wild on this day. Watch competitors in costumes try and make their way across an icy cold pond at bottom of Ambush. $20 registration fee gets you signed up and a gift, space is limited for participants. Register at the Clocktower between 11-1pm Saturday, April 23rd. Event will begin at 4pm and music will follow in the plaza afterward.

Montana Folk Festival

In July 2011, the Montana Folk Festival will be presented in Butte Montana from July 8th - July 10th. The Montana Folk Festival, the successor event to the three years of the National Folk Festival in Montana features live musical entertainment, a dance stage, festival food vendors, a family area and so much more! KLIM Big Sky XC

Time: 10am - 4pm
Location: Big Sky Resort

Saturday racing: Youth & Novice racers from nearly every state in the west take on the Green Circle race course. The KLIM Big Sky XC is round 6 of the AMA West Hare Scrambles Championship Series. Racers ranging from 4 yrs old to 60+ are competing for national championships in 27 different classes. The Hare Scrambles racing format is an off-road motorcycle event with a 6+ mile race course on single track, access roads, and technical assents/ descents. Youth and novice races are between 45 - 90 minutes in length. The first racer to arrive at the finish line at the end of the race time with the most amount of laps completed is the winner. A combination of speed, technical riding ability, and phyisical endurance are required to win a Hare Scramble race. 7:00pm: Awards ceremony at Whiskey Jacks in the resort's Mountain Mall. KLIM Big Sky XC

Time: 9:30am - 4pm
Location: Big Sky Resort

SUNDAY racing: Pro/expert and intermediate racers from nearly every state in the west take on the Black Diamond and Blue Square race courses. The KLIM Big Sky XC is round 6 of the AMA West Hare Scrambles Championship Series. Racers ranging from 4 yrs old to 60+ are competing for national championships in 27 different classes throughout the weekend. The Hare Scrambles racing format is an off-road motorcycle event with a 6+ mile race course on single track, access roads, and technical assents/ descents. Pro/Expert and intermediate races are between 2 - 3 hours in length. The first racer to arrive at the finish line at the end of the race time with the most amount of laps completed is the winner. A combination of speed, technical riding ability, and phyisical endurance are required to win a Hare Scramble race. The Swift Current Chair lift is open for specators for both Sunday races. Pro/expert race class starts at 12:30pm. The Pro class is truly a professional level event. Racers in this class include nationally recognized motorcycle atheletes.
